Inspired by Every Baby and Image I`ve Seen

Inspiration comes from all over. Your children, all other children, and all that surrounds you.
I started sewing by hand at 4 when my mother started to teach me to make Yo Yo`s. It was miraculous to me. From that moment my appreciation for all things handmade grew.
I can not help myself in stopping at a fair and purchasing and googling over so many crafts.
It is part of who I am now. Something I am passing down to my children.
This past fall my mom visited and started to teach my daughter to crochet. I saved the first chain she made and a photo of the two working together. An image forever ingrained in my memories. This of course lead me to scrap book. Now that is another story.

Well inspiration and the need to craft comes from all over, so when you purchase something handmade you are in turn sharing in that inspiration and experience.

My belief in buying handmade

I truly believe that buying handmade items can enhance our lives. When I started my own little handmade shopping site, Hyenacart.com, in 2004, I don't think I totally understood how profound a shift it would make in my life. I was simply putting together a place where people could sell their handmade goods. But as I've watched the site and the community grow, and have become more entrenched in this idea of furnishing my and my family's life with handmade items, I've realized that handmade items can enrich a person's life in a way that mass-produced items simply can't.

Handmade items have a soul, and they are filled with the positive energy of their makers. I feel deeply satisfied watching my daughter play with her hand-sewn Waldorf doll, or my son building castles with handmade blocks. I wear my one-of-a-kind handmade jewelry with pride and often get compliments and inquiries about the beautiful pieces. When it's time for me to relax, I can sink into a hot bath fragrant with handmade bath salts and soaps.

I coded this site in one over-excited holiday weekend, with visions of how it could change the world -- giving people a chance to inspire me, themselves, and each other by describing how handmade items have enriched their lives. I would love for people to use this space to post their musings on buying handmade, or simply to share their latest or favorite handmade purchases.

Please post your story and join in on the effort, or, if you haven't done much handmade shopping, read through the posts and see if inspiration sparks within you. I look forward to seeing you take part in the handmade community!

Holly's Designs's handmade inspiration

I really like to buy handmade because it helps out local communities. I get tired of seeing everything coming from overseas. By supporting overseas products we indirectly support inhumane working conditions.

Melissa's handmade inspiration

My inspiration for buying and selling handmade items was and is my son, Emerson. From the time we began trying to get pregnant till my son was born we had about a year and a half to read every book we could find on natural childbirth and healthful living. When my son, 2 weeks past due, began to die in my womb and I swelled to 230 lbs - double my normal pre-pregnancy weight - our dream of a homebirth ended in an emergency c-section which barely saved both of us. It was a very slow and painful recovery for me - in fact at 21 months post partum I am not fully recovered. My son did great though and was a fighter from the start! He kept me going on the days when I couldn't even get up to feed myself because of the pain. Somehow he kept me going. As I had been stuck on the couch the last 11 weeks of my pregnancy, I was still stuck on the couch for most of the first few months of his life. All I could do was love him, nurse him and hold him. I eventually learned to crochet and then Tunisian crochet longies to go over his cloth diapers to have something else I could do since I couldn't get up and around well. As I crocheted, I healed - both physically and emotionally. It was a creative outlet that kept me at my best for him. I discovered Hyenacart as a place where I could go to chat with other similar minded Mommas. I enjoyed buying and eventually selling items that were unique and made with so much love. It means a lot to me to know that often my hard earned money also supports another family's ability to be together as much as possible by having the chance to work from home. Hand made is home made - and that is important!
